About Voglib (Voglibose)

Rating of sales:

Also known as:  Voglibose.

Description

Voglib is an anti-diabetic oral medication with the active ingredient, Voglibose, an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor that delays the digestion of oligosaccharides and disaccharides into monosaccharides. The medication reduces glucose absorption and helps prevent hyperglycemia and decrease the risk of macrovascular complications. Voglib is used in the treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) in patients whose hyperglycemia can’t be controlled by diet and exercise alone. It can also be used in combination with other oral hypoglycemic agents like sulfonylurea or metformin in cases where their effect isn’t strong enough to control hyperglycemia. Voglibose enhances insulin secretion and sensitivity and can be used in combination with insulin in the treatment of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). By controlling glucose level Voglib helps to prevent such severe complications of diabetes mellitus as heart attacks, kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, and limb loss.

Indications

Treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) where hyperglycemia can’t be controlled by diet and exercise alone.

Treatment of potent non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) in combination with sulfonylurea or metformin where hyperglycemia can’t be controlled with other OHAs (oral hypoglycemic agents) alone.

Treatment of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in combination with insulin in patients with an impaired glycaemic control.

MOA (mechanism of action)

Voglibose is an inhibitor of alpha-glucosidases, enzymes that hydrolyze oligosaccharides and disaccharides to glucose and other monosaccharides. By inhibiting alpha-glucosidases Voglibose slows down the absorption of glucose into the small intestine which results in the reduction of postprandial blood glucose level. Voglibose also promotes glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) which inhibits glucagon secretion and enhances insulin secretion and sensitivity. This way Voglibose helps in lowering fasting glucose levels.

Dosage

The medication is taken orally with a meal. Voglib should be chewed with the first bite of food or swallowed whole with some liquid right before the meal.

Accurate Voglib dosing regimen should be recommended by a doctor for each patient individually.

Maximum dose: 0.6 mg three times a day.

Missed dose

If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as you remember about your missing and make sure it’s taken with food. If it is the time for the next dose you should continue your regular dosingschedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one. Do not take Voglib between the meals.

Overdose

An excessive dose of Voglib may lead to a transient increase in flatulence, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. If an overdose occurs and you are feeling unwell, you should seek emergency medical attention or contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Storage

Store at room temperature below 30°C (86°F) away from excess moisture and heat. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date. Keep out of the reach of children.

The most common side effects associated with Voglib are:

  • flatulence
  • abdominal distension
  • diarrhea
  • stomach ache
  • hypoglycemia
  • skin rashes
  • elevated liver enzymes
  • hepatotoxicity

Side effects occurrence does not only depend on the medication you are taking but also on your overall health and other factors.

Do not take Voglib if you suffer from diabetic ketoacidosis.

Do not take Voglib if you suffer from pathological conditions and bowel diseases that may deteriorate due to the increased gas formation in the intestine, e.g. larger hernias, Roemheld's syndrome, intestinal obstructions, intestinal ulcers.

Do not take Voglib if you have a history of laparotomy, ileus, diabetic pre-coma, diabetic coma, severe infections, major surgeries or traumas.

Do not take Voglib if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.

Voglib is not recommended for children under the age of 18.

Taking Voglib with sulfonamide and sulfonylurea derivatives, biguanides, insulin preparations, and agents that improve insulin resistance may lead to hyperglycaemia. In this case their doses should be lowered.

Taking Voglib with the drugs that improve the hypoglycemic effect of anti-diabetic drugs (e.g., beta-blockers, salicylic acid drugs, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, fibrate derivatives) may lead to hypoglycaemia. In this case the dosage must be adjusted accordingly.

If you’re taking Voglib with anti-diabetic drugs such as epinephrine, adrenocortical hormone andthyroid hormones the dosage needs to be adjusted.
